In River Raid, the player gets to fly a jet over a river valley, shooting enemies (destroyers, helicopters, jets and tanks) as they go. Vital enemy bridges divide the river and they also have to be destroyed. Fuel is extremely important, as it depletes as the player flies up the river. Flying over fuel barges replenishes the fuel, but the player has a tactical decision to be made, as they can also be shot for extra points.

Due to the randomly generated levels, the player is never likely to see the same level twice. As the player progresses through each level, the frequency of fuel barges reduces as the number of enemies increase!
