H.E.R.O. is an arcade game where the player controlls Roderick Hero and flies him through a variety of caverns in search of trapped miners.

R. Hero works as part of the Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operations. He is equipped with a copter backpack to allow him to fly through the mines, although it only has a limited amount of power (which effectively sets a time limit for each level). He can fire bullets at various obstacles, including springing spiders, shaft bats, mine moths, nesting snakes and tentacles.

Some of the shafts have to be blasted first with a stick of dynamite, but the player has to ensure that R. Hero is nowhere nearby when the dynamite goes off!

If R. Hero reaches the bottom of the shaft and rescues a trapped miner, the points awarded are based upon the amount of power and dynamite left.

The game features 20 different mine levels to battle through, and although the first few are very easy, they become progressively harder as more monsters are introduced, along with some mine shafts that have no lighting at all!
