G.I. Hero is a sideways scrolling maze game, where the player controls a soldier walking along pathways in a jungle, looking for items to pick up whilst shooting at enemy soldiers who are on patrol.

The soldier must locate and/or use a number of items, including a message decoder, a torch, wire cutters, a homing beacon and he must also befriend a guard dog to help him dispatch the enemy soldiers.

There is a game menu system, accessed by turning the soldier to face front and then pressing fire.
