Silicon Dreams is another collection of previously released Level 9 text adventures that have been updated with more text and a graphic for every location (machine memory permitting). The three games are Snowball, Return to Eden and The Worm in Paradise – a classic trilogy of science fiction adventures set in the far future.
Snowball begins with the briefest of opening location descriptions:
It is dark, you cannot see.
Searching reveals a lever, and pulling it slides open the lid to the sponge-lined coffin that you start the game inside. As Kim Kimberley, your task is to undo the sabotage that will otherwise condemn the starship Snowball to plunge into a nearby sun.
Return to Eden follows immediately after the events in Snowball. The starship has been saved, but Kim has been framed for the attempted sabotage and is now a wanted woman.
Having crash-landed on the planet Eden, it's the player's job to survive long enough to locate the colony that inhabits the planet. The game begins inside a spaceship:
You are in the control room of a crashed stratoglider. A vision screen shows the strange plants of Eden. There's an opening behind you.
First priority is to grab the geiger counter, compass and radiation suit from the walk-in wardrobe and then escape from the ship before Snowball blasts it to bits, finding somewhere safe underground to escape the blast and the subsequent radiation.
The final game, The Worm in Paradise is the most political of the three. Kim is now safely ensconsed as leader of Eden, and you play one of her descendants trying to rid the last human colony from corruption. The game starts in a surreal garden:
You are in the northwest corner of a garden paradise, protected by a high wall up which flowers climb. Bright butterflies flutter on the balmy breeze and skylarks sing overhead. Exits are east and south. You can see a bench.
Each adventure was already a classic in its own right, so improving them and selling them together in one collection makes for a superb text adventure package.
